As global conversations about deforestation intensify, this province on Sulawesi Island shows how green growth and forest protection can move together. Through SVLK certification, renewable plantations, and responsible biomass production, Gorontalo proves that development doesn’t have to mean deforestation.

The Shift Toward Sustainable Growth

For many years, the word deforestation Gorontalo often appeared in public discussions about Indonesia’s forestry challenges. Yet, the current picture looks very different. Instead of uncontrolled forest loss, Gorontalo has built a regulated, transparent, and sustainable forestry system that supports both nature and the local economy.

At the heart of this transformation is the use of Industrial Forest Plantations (HTI)—lands developed specifically for timber and biomass production. These plantations are managed under strict replanting cycles, ensuring that each harvested area is replaced by new growth.

The result is a forestry system that functions more like a renewable resource, not a one-time exploitation.

SVLK: The Foundation of Green Industry

The Timber Legality and Sustainability Verification System (SVLK) plays a central role in Gorontalo’s sustainable transition. This system ensures that every forestry product—from logs to wood pellets—comes from legal and sustainable sources.

According to Erwan Sudaryanto, Director of Forest Product Processing and Marketing, SVLK provides a strong legal framework, independent auditing, and international recognition. Companies that comply with SVLK can prove their operations are environmentally responsible and transparent.

This certification has become Gorontalo’s key to accessing global markets. Buyers in Japan, South Korea, and the European Union now require sustainability proof before accepting biomass or wood-based imports. Gorontalo’s SVLK compliance gives it a competitive edge in this growing sector.

Biomass Production Without Forest Loss

Gorontalo’s green industry growth centers around biomass production, especially wood pellets—a renewable energy source replacing fossil fuels. Official data shows that Gorontalo contributes around 29.96% of Indonesia’s total wood pellet output.

National production jumped from 103,356 cubic meters in 2020 to 333,971 cubic meters in 2024, supported by 35 certified plants with a combined capacity of 3.18 million cubic meters per year.

What makes this growth remarkable is that it’s achieved without expanding into natural forests. All materials come from licensed plantations regulated under the SVLK framework, keeping the province’s forest cover stable while generating green energy and economic value.

Baca juga: Menikmati Pesona Wisata dengan Travel Surabaya Malang Terbaik

Local Communities Drive Sustainability

Preventing deforestation isn’t just about policies—it’s also about people. In Gorontalo, local communities actively participate in reforestation programs, seedling cultivation, and supply chain monitoring.

These initiatives create jobs, provide steady income, and build environmental awareness among residents. For many, sustainable forestry has become a long-term livelihood, not just a seasonal activity.

By involving communities directly in forest management, Gorontalo ensures that sustainability is not just a government directive but a shared commitment.

Gorontalo’s story proves that green growth without deforestation is possible. By combining strict governance, renewable forestry, and community-driven initiatives, the province has become a benchmark for sustainable development in Indonesia.

Deforestation Gorontalo is no longer about loss—it’s about balance, innovation, and responsibility. Through systems like SVLK and continuous replanting, Gorontalo shows that the path to progress doesn’t need to cut down the future.

Don’t forget to share our article itri.ac.id, follow our newsletter.
